Durability extends engine life

One concern for engine designers is piston skirt scuffing. Scuffing happens when the piston comes to the top of the cylinder and changes directions abruptly. The piston skirt compresses the oil film and can potentially break through, allowing metal-to-metal contact. Eventually, this contact leads to unneccessary wear on the piston and cylinder wall.

With consumer demand driving engine manufacturers to extend warranty periods, our piston coating services are really a form of insurance. At a cost of only a few pennies per piston, skirt coating minimizes scuffing and extends engine life dramatically.

Fuel efficiency

Piston skirt coating reduces friction in the engine thereby improving engine efficiency. Subsequently, fuel economy is improved, potentially as much as five percent.

With ever-stringent government regulations pressuring engine manufacturers to increase fuel economy, our piston coating services make sense.

The environment

An engine equipped with coated pistons is a more environmentally friendly engine.

A skirt coated piston has a better piston to cylinder seal. The improved fit that results from this seal reduces the amount of combustion gases that can escape past the piston and leak into the crankcase. Thus, skirt coating reduces the amount of hydrocarbon emissions that would ordinarily pass into the environment as an air-pollutant.

In addition, an engine equipped with skirt coated pistons contributes to the reduction of noise pollution. The relatively soft skirt coating acts as a cushion between the piston and the cylinder wall. As the piston comes to the top and bottom of the cylinder, a slapping action occurs due to the change in direction. Being somewhat hollow, an un-coated piston will tend to ring like a bell. However, an engine equipped with skirt coated pistons will run considerably quieter.

Cold weather "perks"

Cold climates increase the chance of piston scuffing, which can ruin an engine within a few miles. However, with the reduced friction of piston coating, scuffing is reduced. Additionally, cold engine start-up is more reliable and quicker.

Easier start-up?
Smaller battery

Cold engine startup is one reason why vehicles have had large batteries. Vehicles of the past needed the extra power from these batteries to help get an engine running. However, piston coating greatly reduces the friction and subsequent power needed to achieve consistent and reliable start-ups. It therefore brings the potential to equip vehicles of the future with smaller, lighter batteries. Weight reduction always leads to a myriad of efficiencies which intertwine and cascade mutually towards an evolution of further efficiencies.
